Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening in Clifton Park, NY

Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most common method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Tooth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every year, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

What does tooth whitening involve?

There are many different methods of tooth whitening. At our office we offer three:

1. In-office laser whitening, or "Zoom Whitening" You can click on the "Zoom Whitening" button on this website for details on this procedure. This is our most popular whitening method as it can be completed in about one hour. We also provide the patient with additional take-home "touch-up" whitening if required.

2. Take-home custom trays. This procedure invloves taking upper and lower arch impressions and fabricating custom-fit trays for the patient to wear for 6-8 hours per night. Our office fabricates the trays and dispenses the bleaching material. The patient loads the trays each night after brushing, before bed. Results can generally be seen within 1-2 weeks and some patients require additional days of whitening to achieve their desired result.

3. Take-home pre-made/pre-loaded bleaching trays. This procedure is called "Tres White". We have recently added this method to our menu of services and patients have really loved it! These trays come in a 10-pack and only need to be worn for 30 minutes - 1 hour per day. Tres White is the least expensive of the 3 whitening procedures listed and often gets a great result.
